The 2.8 V6 is known worlds over for easy power, with very few modifications. Our team has a respect for these motors, especially for any motor that can take extreme amounts of abuse, and not even break a sweat. We have boasted about the B284's capabilities for years, and many Saab owners have been throwing big turbo kits at their stock-internal V6s for quite some time now. What we are starting to come much more frequently across in recent years, are head gasket issues, especially on the higher mileage B284s. There is definitely a variety of options when it comes to building out these motors. What many do not realize is that these V6s can actually be bored out all the way from a 2.8L to a 4.0L. This V6 is a platform that has never really had much attention until recently. These motors are a phenomenal platform to explore, and we are only revolutionizing the support more and more each day.

When building your B284, there are different build options available, especially when it comes to displacement. While we have the motor apart, wear and tear components will be addressed, as well as weak components and faults in the motor, for improved performance.

A FULL B284 OVERHAUL

HIGH FEATURE ENGINE SERIES

The B284 is a motor that many new generation Saab fans know and love. It is a heavy-duty engine, and power is made quite easily made on stock internals, with very few modifications, in comparison to other platforms. This motor did not stem from a Saab creation, it was born from GM’s involvement. And as always, with a Saab twist.

The motor family that started it all for the B284 was GM’s High Feature Engine Series, most commonly known as the HFV6 Series. Being first introduced in 2004, this motor family was actually a joint venture done by Holden and Cadillac. Cadillac was in charge of a majority of the designs and most of the first production uses took place in the united states. Holden, however, was in charge of developing the smaller displacement motors. For example, Saab’s 2.8 V6. Holden’s motor development took place in Australia. This magnificent motor was actually developed by the same international team of engineers that developed both the GM EcoTech and the GM Ellesmere V6. The EcoTech is what we see in the 2.0L NG 9-3s and NG 9-5s. A member of the Ellesmere V6 Series is what we see in the NG 900, the 2.5L V6. A quirky, 54° V6. Yes, from that horrendous motor, spawned something quite phenomenal. A seemingly typical Saab trend, especially given the history of the H-Series motors.

From here, a nice variety of 60°, 24-valve V6s were born. The LP1 is what brings one of our favorite six-cylinder engines of all time into play. The LP1 variant was the foundation of what we know and love. A 2.8L, naturally aspirated V6. This motor was first utilized by Cadillac. When brought to Saab, they just knew that a naturally aspirated V6 was not enough. Then, our beloved LP9 came along. What is the best thing to do with the LP1? Throw a turbocharger on it!!! The LP9 is nearly the same as the LP1. Same bore, same stroke, but now came a different compression ratio. To pair with the boost being thrown at it, lowering the compression ratio was the best idea. Holden was responsible with the manufacturing of this new, lower compression 2.8, and Saab, most famously, was responsible for turbocharging this engine. This convoluted family tree is where the B284 was born. Utilized in the NG 9-3, and NG 9-5, Saab only continued to live up to their turbocharging reputation.
